The Crab Nebula is a supernova remnant, the result of a supernova explosion that was first observed by Chinese astronomers in 1054 AD123. It is located in the constellation Taurus and is about 6,500 light-years away from Earth. The Crab Nebula is 6 light-years wide and contains mysterious filaments that are complex and have less mass than expected. In June 2021, scientists announced that the Crab Nebula may be the remnant of a new type of supernova, an electron-capture supernova. The Crab Nebula also contains a pulsar, which is a neutron star as massive as the Sun but with only the size of a small town.
